How The Humane Society Of The United States.
The Humane Society of the United States is involved in more than keeping animals which have been rescued for people to come and adopt. While part of the work conducted by the organization is to help the local organizations in their work, HSUS’s work is usually more than that. Celebrating Animals, Confronting Cruelty is the motto of the organization and represents the complex work that is carried out by the organization.
Thousnds of species exist today in the world today. Part of the work that HSUS gets involved in is to protect, save, and rescue these animals. Although most of the organizations work is carried out in the United States, HSUS has extended to other countries with some its work being to rescue some of the animals in the Ocean. Some of the animals the organization has participated in rescuing have been involved in racing, rodeos, Zoos, circuses, hunting, fashion, aquariums and research. The list is however long.
It is the work of HSUS to work with pet owners in ensuring their safety and security and also providing the support to the other local animal shelters The organization is also presenting pushing for pieces of legislation both locally and internationally. The laws that the organization has been lobbying are meant to ensure that animal cruelty has been eliminated. There are instances when disasters occur, such as the Hurricane Katrina or the Tsunami which hit South East Asia. In such scenarios the HSUS is always ready to travel in the area to help in the rescue mission of the animals. The HSUS has programs that ensures that home owners are educated about the backyard animals such as squirrels.
In the united states, HSUS was not the first organization to be involved in animal welfare. The first one was the society for the prevention of cruelty of animals which was founded in 1886. Prior to this organization, there had not been another such organization in the U.S. More other organizations came up. In 1887, delegates from these organizations agreed to collapse and form the American Humane Association. In 1954 however, there was rift between members and some of those split formed what is now known as HSUS.
The main aim of HSUS is to eradicate animal cruelty worldwide. The first legislation which it pushed was the removal of the law that required shelters to turn over animals to be used in research work. The organization has led to passing of many laws that protect animals.
